The saint they called "the dunce"

Giuseppe Maria Desa was born in a stable in 1603 - literally, not metaphorically. His father had died before his birth, leaving the family in crushing debt. Their home was seized, and his mother was forced to give birth in a shed behind the house. From the start, Joseph's life was marked by poverty and rejection.

He was slow to learn, clumsy, absent-minded, and prone to standing with his mouth open - earning him the nickname "the Gaper." He was dismissed from the Capuchin friars after eight months for being unable to perform basic tasks. His own mother called him useless.

But Joseph had one extraordinary quality: when he prayed, he forgot everything else. He would become so absorbed in contemplation that he lost awareness of his body entirely. And then, witnesses say, he would rise off the ground.

God does not ask for much - He asks for a heart that is willing.

Seventy documented levitations

Over the course of his life, Joseph of Cupertino was witnessed levitating at least seventy times - by cardinals, by the Spanish ambassador, by Pope Urban VIII himself. He would cry out, rise into the air, and hover for minutes at a time, often during Mass or while praying.

The Church didn't know what to do with him. He was moved from convent to convent, forbidden from saying Mass publicly, kept in seclusion, moved from convent to convent for decades. Not because they doubted him - because the crowds he attracted were unmanageable.

As for his exams: Joseph could barely read. But for his diaconate exam, the bishop happened to ask Joseph to explain the one passage of Scripture he actually knew. For the priesthood exam, the bishop was so impressed by the other candidates that he skipped Joseph entirely. He passed. Some call it luck. His students call it patronage.

Why he matters now

Joseph of Cupertino is the patron saint of people who feel unprepared. People who walk into the exam room, the interview, the pitch meeting, knowing they're not the most qualified person in the room - but showing up anyway.

His story isn't about natural talent. It's about a man who was told his entire life that he wasn't enough, and who kept going because he believed something bigger was carrying him.

He is the saint for anyone building a quiz, taking a test, or launching something that feels bigger than their abilities.
